Glee Season 4 Finale: A Sudden Departure and Lots of Unanswered Questions

[Spoiler alert: This post reveals major plot points from Thursday's Season 4 finale of Glee. If you haven't watched yet, might we suggest you check out the latest edition of "Fondue for Two" instead?]

Last year's Glee season finale left little to the imagination. Fans knew exactly who was — and wasn't, ahem, Brittany — graduating from McKinley High and where exactly all our beloved now-former New Direction-ers were going. Mercedes was off to L.A. to try to make it as a singer! Puck was also headed out west, but instead to clean pools and score a hot MILF of a girlfriend! And most famously, Rachel was practically shoved onto a New York-bound train by her loving boyfriend, Finn, in order to follow her dreams and become Cassandra July's punching bag a Broadway star!

Unfortunately, things were not tied up in such neat packages for the Season 4 finale. Certain cliff-hangers were revealed, such as the person who has been Catfish-ing Ryder. (If you guessed anyone besides Unique, do not pass go, do not collect $200). And Will and Emma finally tied the knot — for realz this time! — in the choir room right after New Directions took home yet another Regionals first place trophy. We even learned that it was Michael Bolton who fathered Sue's child! And it only took ... 22 episodes!

In the most devastating development of all, Brittany announced that she had accepted early admission to MIT and that the prestigious school wanted her to leave McKinley High immediately to start her studies. As a longtime fan of Glee, I know very well that it's best served with suspension of disbelief, but seriously? No college would require someone leave before they get their high school diploma and that's not at all how early admission works! Also, why are Glee fans being deprived of one of the show's most consistently funny characters? What did we do to deserve this? At least, we'll always have "My Cup."

Unfortunately, for all of the answers Glee did provide fans — its cliff-hangers were far from satisfying. Viewers were treated to Rachel's beautiful performance of Celine Dion's "To Love You More" for her final Funny Girl audition, but she disappeared from the rest of the episode with nary a shot of her waiting anxiously by her cell phone. And while Blaine made it known — to everyone but Kurt that is — that he intended to propose, all fans saw was Blaine holding what appeared to be an engagement ring box behind his back in the choir room. But what about Kurt telling their new female friends that he and Blaine were just that — friends — and nothing more?

Maybe it's because the show has been light on the comedy and extra heavy on the drama — school shootings! child molestation! — this season. But for all of the dramatic plot points established in the finale, the actual ending of the episode felt anticlimactic. Just the very possibility of Rachel taking on one of Barbra Streisand's most iconic roles is enough to keep the show's loyal fans coming back for more. But with such a large ensemble, it seems like it should have been easier to lay more groundwork for the two — yes, two! — seasons ahead. At least we have another round of graduation to look forward to?
