Kelly Ripa, John Oliver Win GLAAD Media Awards

Kelly Ripa and John Oliver were among the recipients of GLAAD Media Awards Saturday night in New York.

The annual awards are handed out to media personalities who have actively promoted the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Ripa was awarded GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award for interviews with LGBT guests on Live! With Kelly and Michael. Oliver was given the award for Best Talk Show Episode, for a Last Week Tonight with John Oliver segment about Pepe Julian Onziema, a Ugandan transgender activist.

In addition, MSNBC news anchor Thomas Roberts accepted the Vito Russo Award, which is given to an out member of the media who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.
