Fox Picks Up a Full Season of Dads

Seth McFarlane's freshman comedy Dads, which has caused a stir because of its possibly offensive material, has been given a full-season order, Fox announced Friday.

"Fox has been looking to break into the multi-camera format for some time," Fox's Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly, said in a statement. "With Dads, we have an asset that we can grow, and we're looking forward to seeing where the fantastic cast and the creative minds of Seth, Alec [Sulkin], Mike [Scully] and Wellesley [Wild] take us the rest of the season."

Starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, Dads follows two thirtysomething men whose fathers (Martin Mull and Peter Riegert) suddenly move in with them. The premise may seem innocent enough, but the pilot caught some negative attention from the Media Action Network for Asian-Americans, when the group publicly urged Fox to reshoot portions of the pilot it deemed offensive and racist. (Fox declined to do the reshoots.)

Although the series has been called the most offensive new show of the season, Fox tried to use the bad press to its advantage when the series first debuted in September. The half-hour comedy premiered to 5.76 million viewers, and its more recent episode on Oct. 22 drew 3.59 million viewers. Fox has also picked up a full season of freshman comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nineand a second season of Sleepy Hollow.
