The original 1996 crime dramedy starred Frances McDormand as pregnant Fargo, Minn., police chief Marge Gunderson, who is assigned to track down a pair of incompetent out-of-town criminals. William H. Macy played the crime's incompetent mastermind, who hires Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom, all in the hopes of erasing his personal debt.

The film earned two Oscars: Best Original Screenplay for the Coens and Best Actress for McDormand.
