Paul Newman's family and friends say goodbye to the screen legend, businessman and philanthropist:

"Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist," Newman's three daughters Elinor, Melissa and Claire, whose mother is Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward, said in a statement.

"Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: 'It's been a privilege to be here.' He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon. During this difficult time, we ask for privacy for our family," Newman's family said.

"There is a point where feelings go beyond words," Robert Redford told ET. "I have lost a real friend. My life - and this country - is better for his being in it."

"I was blessed to have known him. The world is better because of him. Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them," said Sally Field, who costarred in Absence of Malice.

"He set the bar too high for the rest of us," said George Clooney. "Not just actors, but all of us."

"He was a master of his craft - an artist respected and emulated by his peers and beloved by movie fans around the world," said Dan Glickman, the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America.

"Paul Newman was the ultimate cool guy who men wanted to be like and women adored," said California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. "He was an American icon, a brilliant actor, a Renaissance man and a generous but modest philanthropist."

"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person," Robert Forrester, vice chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said in a statement.

"It's a great loss, in so many ways. The history of movies without Paul Newman? It's unthinkable. His presence, his beauty, his physical eloquence, the emotional complexity he could conjure up and transmit through his acting in so many movies - where would we be without him?" asked Martin Scorsese, who directed The Color of Money.

"Yes, his eyes were that blue and beautiful. I had the most memorable time singing and dancing with Paul in the musical version of Our Town on live television with Frank Sinatra," said Eva Marie Saint. "His legacy as a humanitarian for children around the world is unmatchable. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Joanne and the family."

"What makes the passing of Paul Newman so excruciating for me is that I have lost one of the best friends I ever had. I have truly dreaded this day," said racing legend Mario Andretti.

"His was an important life lived in ways that exemplified what good, caring human values look like in a truly decent human being. In his life and in his work, he was a giver - and never a taker," said Sidney Poitier, who costarred in Paris Blues.

"He was always a hero of mine, both as an actor and as a man, and it was an honor to have known his wonderful spirit, to act with him, to laugh with him, and to sit in the passenger seat while he drove 100 mph with mischief in his eyes," said Tim Robbins, who costarred in The Hudsucker Proxy.
