The apple doesn't fall far from the Shondaland tree.

From former Grey's Anatomy and Scandal writer Peter Nowalk comes How to Get Away with Murder, the third piece of ABC's #TGIT lineup and your sure-to-be new obsession. Viola Davis stars as Annalise Keating, an imposing criminal law professor who handpicks students to work at her firm. But things get a tad more complicated when the kids find themselves embroiled in a murder and need to figure out a way to get away with it, as they (presumably) learned so well from Keating.

"I always liked these normal people whose lives were mapped out in a vicious way, and their lives get hijacked by some event, especially when your life feels the most promising — you're going to law school, but you make one wrong decision, you take one weird job and suddenly your life is down a whole different path," Nowalk tells TVGuide.com. "Definitely for a TV show, it was about taking people whose lives were one way and twisting it and seeing how they would react to another situation, in this case a murder. And I knew Annalise was a very controversial, strong female character who would be a little Svengali sometimes and very relatable sometimes."Every fall, TVGuide.com's editorial staff chooses their picks for the best shows of the new season.
