It's getting really real on The Goldbergs.

Fall TV: Hot scoop on your favorite returning shows

As is the case with most story lines on the ABC sitcom, Wednesday's episode (8:30/7:30c) will be based on creator Adam F. Goldberg

's childhood. Like his namesake, Adam (Sean Giambrone) will audition for the school play — Jesus Christ Superstar, natch — as seen in the exclusive sneak peek below. But when he doesn't get cast as Jesus himself, Smother Knows Best Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) takes it up with his drama teacher, Miss Cinoman (Ana Gasteyer).
Miss Cinoman is Susan Cinoman, a playwright and Goldberg's middle school drama teacher who encouraged him to write. "I became obsessed with playwriting when I was a kid," he tells TVGuide.com. "She'd read my stuff and the first one that was performed a lot, she was like, 'OK, now you're onto something.' She was always someone I'd admired, and she left our school to pursue playwriting and moved away."After The Goldbergs premiered last year, Cinoman reached out to her old pupil and pitched a ready-for-TV true story. "She was like, 'I gotta tell you this story that happened with your mom,'" Goldberg says. "She told me how she had a face-off with Beverly Goldberg when I didn't get cast in the role I wanted in the play. Theater was my thing because I didn't fit in, but I wasn't good at acting, so it was hard! So my mom was always storming down there demanding that I get better roles. So I was like, 'That's totally an episode!' So my middle school drama teacher has a credit on the episode."

Fall TV: Must-see new shows

Both the real Miss Cinoman and Beverly Goldberg visited the set during the episode's production — and they hadn't seen each other since that dramatic showdown. "They got along great! It was just surreal and wonderful to see someone I had admired so much on my set like a Jewish mother pinching my cheeks because she was so proud of me. She was sitting next to my mom and it was almost like they were competing for who loves me more," Goldberg says. "It's pretty amazing. And Ana is so great and perfect as her. What she pitched became an episode, all the way to the title, 'Mama Drama.' It was a fun, once-in-a-lifetime experience."Check out exclusive photos of the fake and the real Miss Cinoman on set below.

The Goldbergs airs Wednesdays at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
