Empire started the season by jumping into the conversation about race, guns and justice that's dominating the news cycle, and Fox's soap shows no signs of backing away anytime soon. The story is mostly personified through Jamal (Jussie Smollett), whose "Need Freedom" song took on violence, and who has an increasing involvement with Angelo DuBois' (Taye Diggs) anti-violence program, which is going to cause more drama going forward.
But Jamal isn't the only one who'll be the face of this hot topic. Andre (Trai Byers), who's just beginning to see some light after Rhonda's (Kaitlin Doubleday) death sent him into another mental health spiral, is going to find himself in serious danger soon. The typically measured and mannered eldest Lyon is about to have an ugly interaction with New York's Finest, and given his already iffy grasp on reality, Andre could very well become yet another unfortunate 2016 hashtag.
