Davison, 65, will play Cyrus Maxwell, a long-sitting and well-respected judge who requests that Jane (Brooke Elliot) take on the case of a death row inmate. Although she's too afraid to say no, she's devoted to helping her client, even if it means at one point having to wake Maxwell in the dead of night to get him to court.
"Drop Dead Diva is thrilled to welcome another stellar actor to the bench," creator Josh Berman says. "He is a revered actor and we are so lucky to have him."
Davison — whose television credits include Law & Order: SVU, Castle, Lost and Ghost Whisperer — follows in the footsteps of other celebrities who played judges on the Lifetime series, including Rosie O'Donnell, Paula Abdul and Wanda Sykes.
Drop Dead Diva returns with new episodes on Sunday, July 10 at 9/8c. Lifetime will air a special Diva marathon of the second season over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, beginning Sunday at 10/9c am and leading into the first two episodes of Season 3 at 9/8c.
