Smash

Here's hoping Megan Hilty doesn't have a complex... For months, NBC has been touting Smash as that new show starring American Idol's Katharine McPhee when in fact she is one of two actresses in the series whose characters are vying to play Marilyn Monroe on Broadway.

The lowdown on NBC's Smash: Weighing the hype vs. the reality

"...and introducing Katharine McPhee!" "Watch this specially filmed music video of Katharine McPhee singing 'Beautiful'!"

And just take a gander at NBC's Mount McPhee poster: It does her co-stars no favors (is Debra Messing about to fall?). Anjelica Huston just barely squeezes in.

So is it safe to assume that McPhee's Karen Cartwright gets to play Marilyn? Monday's season premiere ended on a cliff-hanger, and word is that, yes, it may take the entire 15-episode first season to see who will get to don the wig and fake mole eight performances a week. But, really, does Hilty's Ivy Lynn even have a shot given NBC's McPhever?

Viewers will get an immediate — if likely temporary -- answer in the next episode. Thinking more long-term, TVGuide.com quizzed the cast just as they were about to shoot Episode 10. Here's what they had to say when asked, "Is that poster a huge spoiler?"

Christian Borle (Tom, the composer): "Yeah, look at us: Reaching, grasping toward the pinnacle," he said, laughing. "Yeah, I don't know if that suggests anything at all."

Katharine McPhee (Karen, the ingénue): "Jack Davenport calls it Mount McPhee — he gave me a lot of sh-- for that. It's funny. That was the first shot we did that day. Of all the photos we took, I don't think any of us actually thought that was going to be the poster they picked. I was quite surprised. Is it a spoiler? I don't think so, but then again, I don't really know because I don't know what happens at the end of the season yet."

Anjelica Huston (Eileen, the producer): "You know, both of these girls are totally capable, but you should know we've got a music star coming in, and she's not on the poster," she said, referring to news that Uma Thurman is going to guest-star in the last third of the season as another leading lady eyeing the role of Marilyn. "Who knows where it's going to go in those last five episodes? I'll tell you I'm torn. We go into those rehearsal halls and watch, and sometimes I favor Kat, sometimes I favor Megan. It's a real problem, I bet."

Raza Jaffrey (Dev, Mayor Bloomberg's deputy press secretary and Karen's boyfriend): "You know what's great about that poster is so many people say to me, 'So, of course she's gonna get it isn't she?' and I always say you've got to watch and see. It's not obvious. It's not all clear what's happening. Uma's coming too. Clearly, Episode 15 is the three of them starring in the Three Musketeers musical. Surprise."

Megan Hilty (Ivy, the seasoned Broadway chorus girl): "Hey, I show up and I do what I'm told," she said. "I stand where I'm told and...yeah."
