Jones passed away from a heart attack at Martin Memorial Hospital in Marin County, Fla.
Born in Manchester, England, Jones began acting on British television at the age of 11. Following an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, a casting agent signed Jones to a contract with a division of Columbia Pictures. He soon earned roles on Ben Casey and The Farmer's Daughter.
In 1965, The Monkees group was formed for a television show about a Beatles-like band. Jones signed on along with Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. Some of the group's hits included the show's theme song ("Hey Hey We're the Monkees"), "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer." The series was canceled in 1968.
The group continued to tour over the years, concluding with 2011's An Evening with The Monkees: The 45th Anniversary Tour. Jones' final performance was on Feb. 19 in Oklahoma.
Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from previous marriages.
