So you saw what I mean by "potentially dangerous," right? After Bethany injured her ankle, I was like, "Oh, of all weeks," but we went for it and got through it, and I'm really proud of Bethany.
This week, we're doing the jazz to "Singin' in the Rain." My very first dance performance ever was to "Singing in the Rain" and I was about 3 or 4 years old. I don't remember it at all. It's on video somewhere. It's me running around the stage with an umbrella. I was the only boy with a bunch of girls. I need to find that. It'd actually be really funny if we can include it in the package. I've always wanted to dance to this song, but I never envisioned doing it with a celebrity as s competition piece. I always thought I would do it as a Macy's Stars of Dance piece. So I had to approach this differently. It's not about what my body wants to do; it's about what her body wants to do. We're using an umbrella for it. Shocking, right? I just gotta make sure we don't use the one Charlie used last season. I'm excited about it. It's going to look beautiful. We've got little things in there that will be fun. We're keeping it classic, but adding things in a little modern twist and musicality in there.
The cool thing is Patricia Kelly, Gene Kelly's widow, wrote a beautiful email to me, allowing us to use the song and saying, "I'd be happy for you to use the song and to do the dance." It was really lovely. Normally, it's hard to get clearance for music in general, so it was really wonderful and humbling to get that from her. It's kind of funny: We got a tweet from Taylor Swift the first week, a tweet from Meghan Trainor the second week and an email from Patricia Kelly the third week. It's great and a little surreal to hear from the artists and to know that they've seen our dance. What will happen in Week 4? (Knock on wood!)
Bethany's ankle is not doing great. We're wrapping it and icing it. The problem is you've got to stay off of it, but we don't have time for that. It's unfortunate. We're doing everything we can to try not to make it worse. It was getting a little worse Thursday when she was on it. I'm adjusting the choreography to favor it a little bit and I'm trying to be conscious about it, like I'd go, "Go to the right, oh, actually, go to your left." Hopefully she'll be feeling better by Monday.
I thought everyone did great this week. Tommy is surprising the hell of me. He is pure entertainment. Peta is doing a great job with him. I know when the cast was announced, a lot of people thought he would be cannon fodder or the first one out. It's so fun to see that you think you know, you think you got it sussed out, but you don't. It happens every season. You look forward to him now. Jane l and Val were fantastic and Lea was phenomenal. Betsey was awesome too. It just makes me so happy to see something go so terribly wrong one week and so right the next. She's just a cool person. She reminds me so much of my grandma who says things that have absolutely no relationship to what's going on around her. It's like, "What are you talking about?!" It's hilarious.
Its sucks to see Tavis go, but I think it was a silver lining in a way. He was just so busy. You saw a little bit of it in the package, but that wasn't even the half of it. The morning of the results show, he shot 10 episodes before he came to set. Ten! How insane is that? I have no idea how he did that. It's very hard for the people who are also working on other projects while doing the show. Maria Menounos was similar. She had a full-time job and all these injuries, and it was tough. Eventually you'll get stretched too thin and something has to give. Tavis is a great guy and I loved what he said the first week: "People know some of us, but not the sum of us." When he said that, I was like, "Wow. That's so true." I'm going to miss him.
I have no idea what's going on with the elimination this week since we had a results show last week and we're back to once a week now. Maybe there won't be an elimination! I don't think about that type of stuff too much. I stopped like 10 seasons ago! I'm sure they have something figured out. All I can think about is my dancing and doing the best we can.
See you Monday!
