At the ceremony, hosted annually by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Nixon received the Vito Russo Award. Named for a founding member of GLAAD, the award is presented to a gay media professional who has made a difference in promoting equal rights.
"Vito Russo is a man we should all honor and remember because life would be entirely different for gay people in America today if it weren't for him," Nixon said on the red carpet.
Behar, one of The View's co-hosts, was presented with the Excellence in Media award. Brothers & Sisters won for Outstanding Drama Series. One of the show's current story lines follows a married gay couple (Matthew Rhys and Luke MacFarlane) trying to become parents via surrogate.
Other TV winners included Parks and Recreation (Outstanding Individual Episode for "Pawnee Zoo"), One Life to Live (Outstanding Daily Drama) , The Oprah Winfrey Show (Outstanding Talk Show Episode) and Prayers for Bobby (Outstanding TV Movie or Miniseries).
