The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway have released statements offering sympathy to the victims of Friday's shooting.

"Words cannot express the horror that I feel," Bale said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. "I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

Added co-star Hathaway in a statement obtained by People: "My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act. I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

Twelve people have died and more than 50 were injured in Friday's shooting when a lone gunman tossed tear gas into an Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a Dark Knight Rises showing before opening fire.

Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, Warner Bros. canceled Friday's Paris premiere and press opportunities for the film and won't release box office numbers until Monday.

The police have the suspected gunman, James Holmes, in custody. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.
