FX's tragically cancelled boxing drama brought the Oscar-nominated actress (for 1974's stand-up biopic Lenny) out of semi-retirement to play Mae, the long-absent mother of heavyweight contender "Lights" Leary (Holt McCallanny). The 67-year-old actress—who was last seen on the small screen in a 2005 episode of Third Watch—still looks great, and she worked up a potent chemistry with Stacy Keach as her ex-husband, Pops.
Of course, Mae turned out to have an ulterior motive in reappearing on the eve of her son's comeback championship bout, and this is the last we'll see of her. (And next week's powerful finale will be the last we'll see of Lights Out). But let's hope this isn't the last we see of Perrine. Maybe FX can work her into Sons of Anarchy as a feisty biker granny.
Did Valerie Perrine floor you on Lights Out?
