Best known as X-Men's Cyclops and Enchanted's Prince, James Marsden was charmingly off-kilter as Barry, a ripped Reiki specialist Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) discovered in their backyard hot tub. Turned out — spoiler alert! — he was a royal nutcase living in their daughter Lily's princess castle. His final smackdown with Cam provided one of Family's most screamingly funny moments this season.
Meanwhile, Jami Gertz, an irksome presence since 1987's Less Than Zero and The Lost Boys, was perfectly cast as Laura, an obnoxious speed demon targeted by Claire (Julie Bowen) as a danger to the neighborhood — and by Phil (Ty Burrell) as the owner who could make him the quarter's No. 1 real estate salesman. The fact that Gertz, who was so strident on the 2002-2006 sitcom Still Standing, could score big laughs on Family proves good writers can triumph over bad actors.
Do you think Marsden and Gertz were worthwhile additions to Family?
