Jeers to Desperate Housewives for wrapping up its seventh season on an ugly note.

The seemingly endless two-hour finale of ABC's soap brought back another Ugly Betty veteran, Tony Plana, but unlike Vanessa Williams, he was not put to good use. He was miscast as Alejandro, the presumed-dead stepfather who raped Gaby (Eva Longoria) as a virginal teenager and returned to stalk her. After inexplicably believing she'd chased him away for good by pulling a gun on him in the woods, Gaby was terrorized by him again in her own home—until husband Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) hit him in the head with a candlestick, accidentally killing him.
That's when things got really weird. Rather than reporting the incident—which seemed like a clear case of justifiable homicide, even though Alejandro didn't have a weapon—Gaby and her fellow Housewives covered it up from their dinner-party guests, including Bree's cop beau (the unappetizing Jonathan Cake). They stored the corpse in a trunk and gaily ate dessert in the same room. Apparently, the show's writers feel like the ladies of Wisteria Lane need a "secret" to bind them together for the eighth—and, we hope, final—season. But like Bree's burnt entreé, this twist just left a bad taste in our mouths.
