Charlize Theron has been appointed a messenger of peace by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Reuters reports.
As one of 10 celebrity messengers of peace, the Oscar winner will be responsible for promoting U.N. ideals with a special focus on ending violence against women.
Theron, a native of South Africa, witnessed domestic violence in her teens when her mother fatally shot her abusive alcoholic father in self-defense. She has since been actively involved in women's rights.
"You have used your voice, compassion and special relationship with the public to create a better world," Ban said.
Other A-list messengers of peace include George Clooney, Michael Douglas, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and naturalist Jane Goodall.
