ABC's upstart General Hospital spinoff Port Charles scored the equivalent of a medical miracle this morning: a Daytime Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series! The half-hour sudser — which nabbed a total of seven nominations — will compete for best soap with CBS's As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. Ironically, ABC's All My Children and CBS's Guiding Light — which were shut out of the top category — led the field with a combined 31 nominations. Elsewhere, new yakkers Dr. Phil and The Wayne Brady Show were singled out in the best talk show slot. They'll face off against Live with Regis and Kelly, Soap Talk (huh?) and The View. I have two major gripes with this year's nominees: Two of my favorite performers — General Hospital's Tamara Braun (Carly) and One Life to Live's Melissa Archer (Natalie) — were inexplicably snubbed. On the plus side, GH's mesmerizing Robin Christopher (Skye) made the cut. Now, if only the show's producers would put her back with Jax...
