CBS Cancels Vince Gilligan's Battle Creek, The McCarthys, Stalker

The magic of Breaking Bad wasn't enough to save Battle Creek!

CBS has canceled Battle Creek, the drama Stalker, and comedy series The McCarthys, TVGuide.com has learned.

Fall TV Preview: New shows coming 2015-2016

Battle Creek was the first series after Breaking Bad to come from creator Vince Gilligan, which CBS thoughtfully reminded you about in every single one of its marketing materials. But the show fell short of expectations: It only premiered this past March to lukewarm reviews (including ours). It was about two cops in a town in Michigan who didn't like other, played by Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters.

The series only averaged 6.45 million viewers, and as of this report, nine of the 13 episodes have aired.

The McCarthys was a misguided mashup of Everybody Loves Raymond, Modern Family, and just about every other family comedy on TV. A bunch of Irish Bostonians love basketball, and each other, even though they yell a lot. Also they have a gay son. Somehow, this thrilling combination failed to resonate. When it premiered, we called it "sweet and awkward and at times offensive" and a "painfully broad attack of high-decibel blarney."

The comedy pulled in an average of 6.8 million viewers over the 11 episodes that have aired.

Stalker was another show from creator Kevin Williamson, whose other series The Following also got bad news today. Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q played LAPD detectives who specialized in stalkers. Our original review of the show, which premiered last fall, called it "tacky, icky violence -- disproportionately perpetrated against unfortunate women -- presented within a glum, indifferently acted formula." The only positive thing that appeared to come out of the show was McDermott and Q's engagement.

It pulled in an average of 7.6 million viewers over 18 episodes, reaching a series low of 5.7 million for the most recent episode. The last two episodes of the season are set to air this month.
