Just because The Carrie Diaries isn't doing gangbusters in the ratings over on The CW doesn't mean the series is going to do something drastic like introduce Carrie's famed friends from Sex and the City early.
This week, the prequel drew 1.5 million viewers and a 0.7 in the 18-49 demographic, a series high since its Jan. 14 premiere of 1.6 million viewers and a 0.6, which dropped in the following two weeks in both measures. However, that's just fine with executive producer Amy B. Harris.
"It's great to blast out in the first episode, but I'd rather grow," she told reporters Friday at a screening of next week's episode. "To become something, rather than to be something and watch it just sort of linger."
Though the producers have already discussed when Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) may meet her future iconic friends — Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte — as well as other large topics like when she'll lose her virginity and how long each season will take (one school year each), Harris says the ratings won't push them to jump the gun, especially since they have the support of the network. The impact the show is having on audiences is much more important to them.
"My feeling was always [that] people were going to come possibly because they were curious about what a prequel of Sex and the City was like," she says. "This is the first show that I've been on since Sex and the City where I feel like I'm getting calls and e-mails and Facebook [messages] from people who I haven't heard from in years. 'I'm watching it with my daughter,' or, 'My daughter is obsessed with it!' Similar things are happening with that show, which is when we did the premiere of the first two episodes of Sex and the City, like eight women came up to me and said, 'That's my life!'"
To draw a parallel to Sex and the City, Harris notes that the HBO drama wasn't even successful in its first season. "We clawed to get a second season pickup for Sex and the City," she says. "Nowadays on HBO, they pick up a show the day after the first episode airs. We did not get a pickup until after the first season had fully aired. We'd been finished filming for six months, I think."
