Blankets to hide under. Check. Cell phone to call for help. Check. Flashlight just in case the power happens to go out. Check. Pillow to muffle your screams. Check. Now you're ready to watch ABC's The River.

From Paranormal Activity's Oren Peli, the new horror-thriller transports audiences to the middle of the Amazon, where famed wildlife expert and TV personality Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) mysteriously went missing six months earlier. His wife (Leslie Hope) and son (Joe Anderson) lead the rescue mission, which takes the family and their camera crew deep into the jungle, where even animals are afraid to venture — a place where the paranormal feel right at home.

"I think it's too simple to call it a horror story," Greenwood says. Each week, the crew will venture farther down the river in hopes of finding Cole, but instead will come face-to-face with a new supernatural creature or occurrence. "Think of the boat as that thing on the Ouija board that moves," he says. "Every episode is like a segment of that Ouija board. It moves from one bizarre but somehow explainable thing, and its resolution, to the next thing, which has nothing to do with the last one. But the continuity is the characters are going through all this stuff."Get the scoop on The River
