Business was booming for new releases Hotel Transylvania and Looperover the weekend at the box office.

The animated film from Adam Sandler grossed an estimated $43 million in its first weekend and set a new record for the biggest September opening, according to Box Office Mojo. Sci-fi time travel film Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, took second place, snatching $21.2 million in its debut weekend.

Box Office: House at the End of Street and End of Watch tie for first place

End of Watch, which narrowly beat the competition to take the top spot last weekend, fell to third with $8 million. Trouble with the Curvefollowed at No. 4. Completing the top 5, House at the End of the Street scared up another $ 7.15 million.

The new acapella movie Pitch Perfect hit the right note with audiences, taking in $ 5.2 million from just 335 theaters to grab sixth place. The other new release of the weekend, Won't Back Down, broke a record as well — for second-worst opening ever after it earned $2.6 million to rank tenth.

Rounding out the top 10: Finding Nemo 3D (No, 7, $3.9 million), Resident Evil: Retribution (No. 8, $3.0 million) and  The Master (No. 9, $2.7 million).
