Days after it received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Clint Eastwood's American Sniper soared to the top of the box office charts over the holiday weekend, opening in wide release to the tune of $90.2 million, Box Office Mojo reports.
That's the highest-grossing January debut of all time, beating the record previously held by Ride Along -- $41.5 million. It's also the second-highest opening ever for an R-rated movie (behind The Matrix: Reloaded). American Sniper is now also the highest-grossing film in this year's Best Picture race.
Oscar nominations: Surprises and snubs
Though they didn't match Sniper, The Wedding Ringer and Paddington also had solid debuts, finishing at Nos. 2 and 3 with $21 million and $19.2 million, respectively.
Taken 3 and Selma each dropped three spots, landing in fourth and fifth place with $14 million and $8.3 million, respectively.
The Imitation Game held steady at No. 6 with $7.1 million, followed by Into the Woodsat No. 7 with $6.5 million.
At No. 8 was The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, which took in $4.8 million in its fifth week in theaters. Unbroken dropped to ninth place with $4.2 million.
Chris Hemsworth's Blackhat bombed in its debut, landing at No. 10 with just $4 million.
