Box Office: 42 Hits a Home Run

The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 knocked it out of the park, so to speak, in its opening weekend, hauling in $27.2 million and easily taking the No. 1 box office spot. The total is nearly double that of 42's nearest competition, Scary Movie 5, which opened in second place with $15.1 million, Box Office Mojo reports.

The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 knocked it out of the park, so to speak, in its opening weekend, hauling in $27.2 million and easily taking the No. 1 box office spot. The total is nearly double that of 42's nearest competition, Scary Movie 5, which opened in second place with $15.1 million, Box Office Mojo reports.

Holding steady at No. 3 was The Croods with $13.2 million, trailed by G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which landed in fourth place with $10.8 million. The Evil Dead remake tumbled from first place to fifth in its second week with $9.5 million, a 63 percent drop-off from its debut.

TV Scorecard: What's renewed? What's canceled?

Jurassic Park 3D ($8.8 million)and Olympus Has Fallen ($7.3 million) came in at No. 6 and 7, respectively. Staying in the Top 10 in its sixth week in theaters was Oz the Great and Powerful, whose $4.9 million earnings dropped it one place to No. 8.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Tyler Perry's Temptation, in ninth place with $4.5 million, and The Place Beyond the Pines($4 million), which inched into the Top 10 after getting a wide release in its third week.
