Box Office: 300 Sequel Smashes the Competition

The 300 sequel Rise of an Empire dominated the box office this weekend, finishing at No. 1 with $45 million in receipts, Box Office Mojo reports.

The only other new release to crack the Top 10 was the animated feature Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which landed in second place with $32.5 million.

The best and worst TV shows based on movies

Last week's top-grossing film, Non-Stop, fell to third place with $15.4 million, while The LEGO Movie dropped a spot to No. 4, earning $11 million in its fifth week.

Son of God, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's pared-down film version of the History miniseries The Bible, fell to fifth place with $10 million.

At No. 6 was The Monuments Men with $3.1 million, which narrowly topped 3 Days to Kill 's $3.06 million weekend gross.

Pixar's Oscar-winning animated film Frozen held steady at No. 8 with just over $3 million, while 12 Years a Slave propelled back into the Top 10 after its Best Picture win at the Academy Awards. The drama finished at No. 9 with $2.1 million.

Ride Along closed out the Top 10 for the second week in a row with $2 million.
