Daveed Diggs, who originated the Tony-winning dual roles of Marquis de LaFayette and Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton, will have a big arc in Black-ish's Season 3, Variety reports.
Diggs play Rainbow Johnson's (Tracee Elliss Ross)brother Johan, who, like his sister, has many of the laid-back, free-spirited traits their mom passed down. That, of course, is a contrast to the upbringing of Rainbow's husband Dre (Anthony Anderson) who grew up in the decidedly-not-posh South Central L.A. and is constantly trying to ensure his kids don't grow up too pampered and privileged.
"He's sort of a hipster, entitled kid who gets on Dre's nerves," creator Kenya Barris told Variety. "He's constantly on a search for the best conditioner for his hair. He's probably gone to Penn or Wharton and could have gotten a great-paying job, but he's trying to find himself. That attitude more than anything makes Dre want to strangle him."
The french connection from Diggs' Hamilton will also cross-over to the Black-ish. Diggs plays a character who has his own affinity for French culture - having gone to Paris and turning his nose up at certain American customs. Johan becomes a hero to the kids, except for the too-savvy-for-her-age Diane (Marsai Martin). Johan is expected to arrive early in Season 3.
Black-ish was recently nominated for 3 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Season 3 kicks off on Sept. 21 on ABC.
