Beyonce’s Dad: Elevator Fight Was a Publicity Stunt

If you're one of the cynical people who thought the infamous elevator fight earlier this year between Solange Knowles and her brother-in-law Jay Z was a publicity stunt, you're probably right — at least according to Solange and Beyonce's father.

In an interview with a Houston radio show, Mathew Knowles accused his daughters and son-in-law of orchestrating a "Jedi mind trick" on their fans, according to Billboard.

"[They needed something to] ignite that tour," Knowles told the Roula and Ryan Show. "It's called a Jedi mind trick. A Jedi mind trick fools you a lot of the time. All I know is everyone is talking about it. Ticket sales went up, Solange's album sales went up 200 percent."

Beyonce and Jay Z's co-headlining On the Run tour kicked off at the end of June, about a month after the elevator incident made headlines.

Of course, this could just be another blip on the timeline of Beyonce's troubled relationship with her father. In 2011, a year after Matthew and Tina Knowles got divorced, Beyonce fired him as her manager and accused him of stealing from her. (Though he's still the acting manager of Destiny's Child.) The two are so estranged that Matthew Knowles has reportedly never met Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay Z's 2-year-old daughter, and Beyonce and Solange skipped Matthew's wedding to model Gena Charmaine Avery last year.
