Bernie Hamilton, best known for his role as by-the-book police Capt. Harold Dobey on ABC's 1970s cop drama Starsky & Hutch, died Tuesday. He was 80.
The actor died of cardiac arrest, Hamilton's son, Raoul, told The Associated Press.
Hamilton was born in Los Angeles in 1928 and got involved in acting at Oakland Technical High School after running away from home as a teenager. He had a number of guest television appearances before landing the role of Capt. Dobey opposite Starsky & Hutch stars Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul. Hamilton also appeared in more than 20 feature films, including The Young One, The Devil at 4 O'Clock and The Swimmer.
Following his role on Starsky & Hutch, Hamilton, the brother of jazz drummer Chico Hamilton, worked in the music industry for 20 years, producing R&B and gospel records for his Chocolate Snowman record label.
