Box Office: Ben-Hur Is a Massive Disappointment

Paramount's Ben-Hur came in a disappointing fifth place on its opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the film was only able to pull in $11.4 million, against a $100 million production budget.

Meanwhile, Suicide Squad enjoyed a third week at the top of the chart despite its almost unanimous critical panning. It scored $20.7 million, bringing its domestic total haul to more than $260 million. Seth Rogen's adult animated comedy Sausage Party finished at No. 2 for the second straight week, grabbing $15.3 million.

Two other new releases also had better openings than Ben-Hur. War Dogs, starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, came in third with $14.3 million. Kabuto and the Two Strings followed in fourth with $12.6 million.

The bottom half of the list was filled with familiar titles. Pete's Dragon fell to No. 6, but could actually overtake Ben-Hur with Sunday night adjustments since it now sits only $19,000 behind the epic remake. The Mila Kunis-led Bad Moms tallied $8.1 million in its fourth week in theaters. Meanwhile, Jason Bourne ($8 million), The Secret Life of Pets($5.8 million) and Meryl Streep's Oscar bait Florence Foster Jenkins ($4.3 million) rounded out the list.
