Hollie and Josh, Beauty and the Geek
Josh Bishop and Hollie Winnard, nicknamed the "old married couple" by the other teams on this season's Beauty and the Geek
(Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET, CW), were forced to leave the mansion last Tuesday despite a near-flawless performance in the elimination room. In talking with the pair, you'd never know they now live very different lives on opposite coasts. TVGuide.com listened in as they laughed, finished each other's sentences, and discussed topics as varied as the scandalous guy-beauty/girl-beauty romance, Betty Boop and back hair.
TVGuide.com: I was sad to see you two go. It was strange that the week before, Tony and Amanda were nominated for not really trying. Then they nominate you, who were taking it seriously and studying hard.
Hollie Winnard: It was a shocker to everybody. Other people were forming cliques, but me and Josh were the ones who brought everyone together.
Josh Bishop: We were trying so hard and helping other people.
TVGuide.com: Rebecca said you, Hollie, had already learned a lot and transformed. You seemed really angry she said that.
Hollie: Yeah, because I myself didn't feel like I had transformed, and I didn't think she was one to judge who was transforming because she wasn't even around. She was playing tonsil hockey with Sam 24/7! [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: How did their relationship affect the rest of the house?
Hollie: It hurt the teams really bad, especially [Sam's teammate] Nicole, as you'll see in the next episode. I felt bad for [Rebecca's partner] Will; she didn't help him study.
Josh: It's not just about helping your partner, it's helping everybody.
Hollie: The whole dynamic of the show is to become a better person, and Rebecca and Sam just threw [that dynamic] into chaos.
TVGuide.com: Do you think Rebecca and Will having won so many challenges makes them an unstoppable couple?
Hollie: Not at all. They dug themselves into a hole because they made an enemy out of both nominated teams.
Josh: Basically enemies with all the teams in the house.
Hollie: They've made so many enemies, they've pretty much signed their death wish [Laughs].
Josh: [Laughs] Not a death wish! Maybe an elimination wish.
Hollie: Well, when you're in that [elimination] room, you really feel like you're going to die!
TVGuide.com: Why were you two called "the old married couple"?
Hollie: We were like a funny old couple that's just so comfortable with each other. We were teasing each other — just fun bickering, not mean bickering.
Josh: We got along great. It was all in fun and hopefully it came across that way on the show.
TVGuide.com: I'm really glad you two hit it off, because it seemed like in the first episode, Hollie, you and Luke were disappointed to not be matched up.
Hollie: Yeah, I was kind of sad at first but it worked out, and I learned a lot from Josh. And even though we weren't on the same team, Luke helped me study a lot. Josh didn't like him, though! [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: Josh, was there some jealousy?
Josh: [Laughs] No! Not really.
Hollie: Yes! Oh, Josh, you're such a liar!
TVGuide.com: Some people in the house were saying that you, Hollie, are a geek at heart. Josh, do you think that?
Josh: Well, you didn't see it on camera, but she's incredibly smart and interested in geeky topics.
Hollie: I'm not that smart, Josh; I didn't even know what a diameter was! [Laughs].
Josh: She could go to a top university and do great.
Hollie: Oh, god no, are you crazy?!
TVGuide.com: So then, Hollie, how'd you end up working as a Betty Boop impersonator at Universal Studios?
Hollie: I've been there six years, and I do Betty Boop, Princess Fiona and little Cindy Lou Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I love performing and I love kids, so I'm back there and I get recognized [from BATG] every day. I would like to eventually move to L.A. I know it's cheesy, but I just want to be in a really bad soap opera!
TVGuide.com: Josh, you're the president of Berkeley's Rubber Band Club. What is that exactly?
Josh: We shoot rubber bands at each other, like in games similar to "capture the flag" but with rubber bands. And we come up with new rubber-band shots and experiment with how far we can get them to travel.
TVGuide.com: Is that a good way to meet girls?
Josh: [Laughs] Umm... we also hold it Friday evenings, so....
TVGuide.com: That's not a good night!
Josh: Well, the problem is it is a good night for most of us: It doesn't interfere with homework.
TVGuide.com: Does your mechanical-engineering major help you make up new shots and angles and such?
Josh: Actually, yes. I've done full, multi-page calculations on rubber-band aerodynamics, and I've shot rubber bands under high-speed cameras to determine velocity.
Hollie: Oh, my god! You are a geek.
TVGuide.com: Sounds like you've made great strides researching something... largely unexplored.
Hollie: But he hasn't been on a date yet!
Josh: Well, that hasn't picked up yet. Hopefully it will. I got cut too early; I still have more to learn!
TVGuide.com: I know you didn't get an official makeover, but did you take any style tips from the show or from your cast mates?
Josh: Actually, yeah.... [Laughs] You'll see at the reunion show.
Hollie: Did you shave your back?!
Josh: You'll see....
Hollie: Oh, my god, did you really? I'm so excited now!
Josh: I'm not telling you what I did, all I'm saying is you'll see!
