FX Renews Atlanta for Season 3, Obviously

But what will the theme be?

File this under, "Well, of course," because FX has officially renewed Atlanta for Season 3.

The comedy won two Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody and two Emmys, including making history when Donald Glover became the first black man to win a directing Emmy for a comedy series for its first season. Even with all those accolades, the show's sophomore effort Atlanta Robbin' Season was even more critically acclaimed with water cooler episodes like "Teddy Perkins" and "Woods."

The only reason FX would let this show go is if Donald Glover said he didn't have more story to tell, but the creative expansion of Season 2 showed that Atlanta still has plenty to explore and we are more than happy to go along for the ride.

Here's the even better news: Since Glover, the creative power behind the series, doesn't currently have a Star Wars movie shoot on the books, Season 3 is expected to drop in 2019. That is still a ways away, but it's much better than the year and a half fans had to wait between Season 1 and Season 2 while Glover was in a galaxy far far away.

Leaning into Atlanta is a great look for FX, obviously. Glover and his creative team are some of the most revered voices in entertainment today as they continue to revolutionize what's possible in basic cable comedy. Atlanta doesn't play by the rules, which is the kind of trendsetting attitude FX needs as they move further into its post-Louis C.K. era.
