Argo Tops Slow Box Office Weekend

Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston in Argo

Argo topped a slow box office weekend as most of the east coast prepared for Hurricane Sandy.

The Ben Affleck-starring drama drew an estimated $12.4 million to top the weekend, bringing its three-week total to $60.8 million, Box Office Mojo reports. Hotel Transylvania also jumped up a slot to No. 2 with $9.5 million.

While Cloud Atlas was the highest grossing new film this weekend with $9.4 million, it was the lowest nationwide launch ever for a Wachowski siblings film, as well as the lowest nationwide opening for Tom Hanks since 1996's That Thing You Do!

Paranormal Activity 4 fails to top predecessor at the box office

Paranormal Activity 4 followed Atlas at No. 4 with $8.7 million. There was a tie for fifth place between Taken 2 and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, both drawing $8 million. The Silent Hill sequel was down 60 percent from its predecessor, which opened to $20.15 million in 2006.

Rounding out the top 10: Here Comes the Boom (No. 7, $5.5 million); Sinister (No. 8, $4.4 million); Alex Cross (No. 9, $5.1 million) and Fun Size (No. 10, $4.1 million).
