TV is quickly running out of superhero comic book characters to bring to the small screen (see: Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, The Walking Dead, Constantine, etc.), so now producers are looking to a very different comic series for inspiration.

Arrow and The Flash executive producer Greg Berlanti's production company has sold Riverdale, a drama based on the characters from the Archie comics, to Fox, Deadline.com reports.

Fall TV popularity contest: Which new shows won you over?

Written by Archie Comics' Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the project is named after the fictional town where most Archie characters reside. The series is set in the present and will offer a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends.

Naturally, the series will explore the famous love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica and will also include other famous characters from comics like Archie's enemy Reggie Mantle, best friend Jughead Jones and the Archie comics' first openly gay character, Kevin Keller.

The 18 most awful things that have ever happened on American Horror Story

In addition to his current role at Archie comics, Aguirre-Sacasa is known for his work on Glee and Looking, as well as the big-screen remakes of Carrie. In addition to his two current CW shows, Berlanti is working on a Supergirl TV series for CBS.

Archie Comics debuted in 1942 and have spawned several animated and live-action series, most notably the long-running Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
