Pool party, baby! After years of trying, superhero rockers The Aquabats finally make it to your TV screen this Saturday with The Hub's new quirky comedy series The Aquabats Super Show!
The show, which debuts Saturday, March 3, features a mix of concert footage, animation and live action skits. The band's all there — MC Bat Commander, Crash McLarson, Jimmy the Robot, Ricky Fitness and Eagle "Bones" Falconhawk.
Christian Jacobs, who plays MC Bat Commander in The Aquabats, is also the co-creator of hip pre-school series Yo Gabba Gabba (which has frequently featured the band) but has been trying to get an Aquabats TV show off the ground for more than ten years. "In many ways Yo Gabba Gabba is a spinoff of the Aquabats show," Jacobs says. In turn, the success of Yo Gabba Gabba helped resurrect The Aquabats Super Show. And just as Jacobs' kids were toddlers when the idea for Yo Gabba Gabba came about, they're now pre-teens and the perfect audience for The Aquabats' more edgy sensibility.
Jacobs describes the new show as a cross between the 1960s Batman, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Land of the Lost and Yo Gabba Gabba. "The Aquabats show is filled with references and influences like fake commercials, wacky public service announcements, and is scary and action-packed," he says. "It's a pop culture pizza."
Yankovic makes several appearances in season one, playing the "President of the World" in one episode and a superhero in another. Other guests include Jon Heder and Lou Diamond Phillips. Jacobs is also the creator and director for The Aquabats Super Show, along with executive producer Jon Berrett.
