Paula Deen won't change on-air cooking style much after diabetes reveal

At the South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Florida on Sunday, chef Eddie Huang asked Bourdain if he felt like a hypocrite, pointing to the chef's unhealthy practice of smoking on his own show while criticizing Deen. "You're right," Bourdain replied, according to People. "I did smoke cigarettes for a lot of years on my show, but I wasn't selling any ... cigarettes. And when I found a spot on my ... lung, I didn't wait three years so I could get a deal selling the patch."

Deen was met with backlash in January when she revealed she had known about her diabetes for three years prior to her announcement but had continued to promote her butter- and fat-laden recipes. She was also criticized for announcing simultaneously that she was now a paid spokesperson for Novo Nordisk's drug Victoza and online program, Diabetes in a New Light. Bourdain was quick to voice his disapproval then too, telling Eater.com, "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... It's in bad taste if nothing else."

Deen, who was also at the festival, responded in kind over at her own demonstration. "There have been two or three haters. I don't know why they're mad at me," she said. "I didn't choose [my diabetes]. I don't care what they say. What I do care about is y'all, and I thank you for the support."
