American Horror Story's Chloe Sevigny: It Only Gets Worse for Shelley

If you can believe it, a double amputation is only the beginning for American Horror Story: Asylum's resident nymphomaniac Shelley.

Briarcliff Manor's most provocative inmate found herself in the clutches of the dastardly Dr. Arden (James Cromwell), whose mysterious experiments were shown in all their glory this week. In order to make sure Shelley (Chloe Sevigny) would never escape, Arden amputated both of her legs. And apparently, he has much more in store for his latest charge. 

"It gets much scarier," Sevigny told reporters Thursday. "Her disadvantage is only increased. She becomes more and more helpless. It's very tragic actually."

With the rest of the asylum assuming Shelley was among those inmates who escaped — in truth, Pepper is MIA and the Mexican is dead — Arden will have plenty of time to play with his food, so to speak. "That's only the beginning of what happens to Shelley," she says. "He transforms her into something else. You see her transform into something not so pleasant. There's four hours of prosthetic makeup." Whether that means Shelley will become one of the Raspers that roam the woods outside Briarcliff, Sevigny would only tease, "She might be going in that direction."

The makeup will enable Shelley to appear helpless, but that's also exactly how Sevigny feels on set while strapped down to the table. She often needs help eating and drinking between takes. "The prosthetic pieces that they put on made it impossible to straighten my legs," she says. "I had to be wheeled around in a wheelchair... that was probably the most challenging part, feeling helpless in that way."

Despite promising to go back for Shelley, Grace (Lizzie Brochere), Kit (Evan Peters) and Lana (Sarah Paulson) won't initially go in search for her. "I think their whole concern is really with themselves and escaping," Sevigny says, noting that someone will eventually look into her disappearance. "You'll be more surprised with who it is," she said. 

Sevigny says this turn of events will hopefully change the audience's perception of her character. "I think she's pretty pissed off," she says. "She's pretty helpless. At the beginning, you're not so much rooting for her. ... Then you see her trying to help Evan's character try to escape and you realize she's pretty selfless in that regard. After she gets in the clutches of the evil doctor, you're more rooting for her and hoping she can escape or find a way out."

But it sounds like Shelley is not long for this world, considering Sevigny admitted she had already wrapped shooting before the season closed. "They might have me come back for something else, I'm not sure," she said, adding that she wanted to do more during the second season. "I wish my part was bigger. That was my first response, but then I let go of my ego and accepted what happens to me and find the joy in that."

With many characters already on the chopping block, it seems Asylum may follow in the footsteps of the first season with many of the main characters ending up dead by season's end. But Sevigny says viewers might be surprised by the fates of those who have apparently already died, including Teresa (Jenna Dewan-Tatum), Leo (Adam Levine) and possibly Wendy (Clea Duvall). "I think it's so different from last season," Sevigny says. "I don't think it really compares with the ghost story. They might be somewhere else. They might be revealed later in the season as something else." Ruh-roh.
