Barbie recently got a makeover; now another of Mattel's franchises is getting television specials. Amazon announced Monday that it inked a deal with the toy company to make four live-action American Girl specials for Amazon Prime.
Two of the specials will feature characters from the American Girl BeForever line of historical dolls while a third will feature characters from the Girl of the Year collection. The contract also allows Amazon to expand into American Girls multi-episode series.

"American Girl resonates strongly with kids and parents alike through its message of self-confidence, adventure, exploration and learning," said Tara Sorensen, head of kids' programming for Amazon Studios. The move strengthens Amazon's goal of expanding its live-action children's programming - much like it's streaming competitor Netflix.
Of course, this isn't the first time American Girls have gotten the film treatment. In 2008, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl starring Abigail Breslin made its theatrical debut and HBO adapted An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong.
The first of the four specials is expected to debut later in 2016.
