Jesus is returning to the small screen, and we're not talking about the upcoming sequel to The Bible (not yet, anyways). Adult Swim has ordered a new live-action comedy called Black Jesus from The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder, Adult Swim announced Monday.

'90s stars: Where are they now?

In Black Jesus, the son of Christ is living in present day Compton, Calif., and  is on a daily mission to spread love and kindness in the notoriously rough neighborhood with the help of his small, but loyal group of downtrodden followers.

Newcomer Gerald "Slink" Johnson (Grand Theft Auto V) will portray Black Jesus in the series, which also stars Charlie Murphy (Are We There Yet), Corey Holcomb (The Cleveland Show), and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks).

McGruder will serve as executive producer on the comedy with Mike Clattenburg (Trailer Park Boys), Norman Aladjem and John Bravakis (The Half Hour). Production has already started, and Black Jesus will premiere later this year.
