The 2-year-old son of NFL star Adrian Peterson died Friday from injuries suffered after allegedly being assaulted, ESPN reports.
The child had been in critical condition in a South Dakota hospital, and Joseph Patterson, the man suspected to be behind the assault, has been arrested.
"Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support," Peterson, a running back for the Minnesota Vikings, tweeted late Friday. "The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. God Bless everyone and thank u so much."
Patterson is being held on two felony counts of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated domestic assault. He appeared in court prior to the boy's death, and his bond was set at $750,000 in cash.
Police and an EMS crew were called to a Sioux Falls, S.D. home, where the child was found unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital. The boy was under the care of Patterson, who is believed to be the boyfriend of the child's mother, and nobody else was home. After it was discovered at the hospital that the child's injuries were consistent with abuse, Patterson was taken into custody and charged.
Peterson missed Thursday's practice due to what was called a personal emergency, but said on Friday prior to his son's death that he would play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. It is unclear whether he still plans to play.
