Law & Order's John McMartin Dead At 86

The acclaimed stage actor also made appearances on Kimmy Schmidt, Murder, She Wrote and Beauty and the Beast

Veteran stage actor John McMartin has passed at the age of 86 from cancer, according to Playbill.com.

In addition to a revered career at the theater, McMartin also had a lofty resume on the small screen, most notably making numerous appearances on the original run of Law & Order, playing various characters between 1992 and 2009. The actor also appeared in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Oz, Spin City, Murder, She Wrote and the '80s version of Beauty and the Beast.

Born in Warsaw, Indiana in 1929, McMartin attended college in Illinois and New York before making his off-Broadway debut in in 1959. He later transitioned to Broadway as Forrest Noble in The Conquering Hero in 1961. He would later go on to receive his first of five Tony nominations in 1966 for his work in Sweet Charity, and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2009.

McMartin is survived by his two children, Kathleen and Susan.
