ABC orders new Joss Whedon drama to series

ABC also picked up new seasons of  Once Upon a Time, Castle, Modern Family, Revenge, Suburgatory, Last Man Standingand The Middleon Friday. Scandal was also renewed one night after the Kerry Washington show hit a series high 3.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic on Thursday.

On Saturday, ABC axed midseason comedy Family Tools and renewed freshman series The Neighbors.

Renewals were expected on all of the series, except Nashville, which has struggled a bit more in the ratings despite favorable reviews and an A-list cast including Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere. Suburgatory was also on the bubble after moving timeslots, from 8:30/7:30c to 9:30/8:30c, on Wednesdays. Revenge will return for its third season without creator Mike Kelley, who will be replaced by new showrunner Sunil Nayar.

Fall TV 2013 Scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?

Of all the cancellations, Happy Endings, is sure to cause the biggest stir with its small but extremely loyal fans. The comedy moved timeslots several times this season, from Tuesdays to Sundays to Fridays, where it wrapped its third-year run last week to 2.13 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating. There has been speculation that USA could pick up the show, much like TBS did last year shortly after ABC axed the underperforming Cougar Town.
