Would you move to America's coldest state to find a lover to keep you warm? That's the premise of Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska (airing Sundays at 9 pm/ET on Fox). Since it's a reality game about hubby-hunting, we preferred the original and more direct working title: I Want A Husband: Alaska. Trés campy!
Fox suspiciously changed it to Bachelorettes right around the time ABC's ratings soared with The Bachelor. "Call me cynical," host Steve Santagati laughs to TV Guide Online. "I think that's probably why they did that." Speaking of cynicism, Alaska's view on women isn't very positive: The opening crawl calls its lovelorn ladies Andrea, Cecile, Karen, Rebekah and Sissie "desperate" and says it's their "last chance for marriage." Last chance? Cecile's only 26!
"It's TV," he shrugs. "There has to be a sense of drama and desperation... It can be degrading. Who knows? Dating is degrading! If you're that age and you're wanting to be married and you're not, well, try anything if marriage is that important to you. I don't believe in the institution of marriage. It's not important to me."
Santagati a successful model for Gap, Gillette and J. Crew, to name a few says he'd never allow Alaska's night cams into his boudoir. "I'm a Scorpio," he grins. "I'm very private." If he did, the emcee jokes: "I would be so outrageous that they wouldn't be able to use anything!"
The single Santagati sounds perfect for Sex and the City's saucy Samantha. Of course, his show has its own dangerous divas. He feels Rebekah only flirts with men to fatten her "dowry" Bachelorettes get $2,000 every time a suitor "pleads" to date them at Proposal Point. "She's working all these guys to get as much cash as she can," he says. "She may've gone in saying she wanted to meet someone she was full of s---."
Ouch! He's just as frank about Cecile who got burned by Tim soon after they became physically intimate. "I thought Cecile was really sweet when the show first came on," Santagati says. "She is turning out to be worse than Rebekah. She is just a f-----g player. She got f-----g used. I don't think she was upset because Tim just 'slept in her bed.' In the show, it looks like she put her head under the covers! I think she [had sex with] him. That's why she was so freaked out he fools around with her and then he disses her in front of everybody!"
At least sweethearts Sissie and Brent seem a sure bet to reach the altar. Only time will tell if we'll hear wedding bells!
Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska's final episode airs Sunday, July 7.
