Paging Bruce Vilanch
! While Sunday's seventh annual Screen Actors Guild Awards marked inspiring victories for Julia Roberts
and the casts of Traffic
and The West Wing
, they also were marred by some of the most poorly scripted presenter banter ever. Witness Leelee Sobieski
squirming as an uncharacteristically smarmy David Boreanaz
) joked: "Sobieski and Boreanaz sort of makes you want to wrestle." But that was nothing compared with the gaffes and gems TV Guide Online picked up from the outspoken winners backstage...
In the evening's funniest fashion faux pas, the nation spied Sex and the City's midriff-baring Sarah Jessica Parker hiking up her Prada tube-top as she took the stage to accept her best actress in a comedy statuette. "I kind of hoped that [the outfit] was un-indictable," Parker babbled sheepishly. "I thought, 'It's Prada' and it was so simple and I liked it so much and that doesn't mean anybody else has to like it, although I wouldn't mind if they did. I just liked it! It was cold in the hotel, but I'm very warm now." (Aww honey, don't worry... We still love ya, and those abs were fierce.)
Visibly moved by her best actress in a drama award, The West Wing's Allison Janney didn't handle the kudos as stoically as her White House press secretary might. "The other women in my category really carry their shows," she demurred. "They're in every single scene. I'm such a part of a team, that I felt very shy... oh, very grateful, and yet it was very hard for me. I love being part of an ensemble because that's where I shine the best the group of actors that I work with are just as concerned with giving you your moment as having their own." Still, she's not too shy to enjoy all those trophies her show's been racking up. Joked Janney: "I will certainly spread them out across the house, so every room should not be without one!"
Fresh from Will & Grace's win for best comedy ensemble, star Debra Messing shared the cast's superstitious secret: "The night we shot the pilot, the four of us got together and held hands and said three lines of something sort of poetic I won't say what it is. It was our way of connecting with each other before we went out into the craziness of doing the show for the first time. We were all so thrilled [with the show's success] that... to this day we still do it." Deadpanned her co-star, Eric McCormack: "What's curious is the three lines are from Macbeth."
Widely considered an Oscar shoo-in for Erin Brockovich, Roberts threw everyone with her emotional acceptance speech. Appearing no less dramatic backstage, she waxed poetic about trophy-collecting. "To get used to it would be to lose a pulse, lose the breath of life," she declared. "No, one mustn't get used to things like this. That would be to take them for granted."
In this kudo-packed awards show season, Roberts said she ranks her fellow actors' plaudits "pretty high on the list. I've never been to the SAG Awards before. I've never been nominated... So to me it's the ultimate praise. Besides your mom saying, 'Well done,' this is really right up there because the people that are voting are the people that impress me and excel at what they do."
