James and Wes: So Yesterday
Last week, Gay Hollywood hit the Sunset Strip for some fey fun: Out magazine's party at Falcon for its annual "Out 100" issue. The eclectic guest list included many of 2003's most intriguing gay (and gay-friendly) personalities. Natch, these included Party Boy, who showed up in search of his personal Holy Trinity: gossip, drama and free beauty products!
So who was there? Boy Meets Boy's James Getzlaff and Wes Culwell were present along with their dates. Yes, as I told you long ago, Bravo's famous dating show duo isn't a couple. They never were. But what about press reports that Getzlaff is seeing Jai Rodriguez, the "culture vulture" from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? "It's so not true," a source told Party Boy. "Jai has a huge crush on James, but they're just friends. Besides, James has a boyfriend."
Indeed, James's escort for the evening was his beau, Universal Pictures publicist Mark Markline. As for Wes, he seemed very in love with himself, posing coquettishly for party photographers every chance he got. (You milk that 15 minutes, baby!) I didn't catch the name of Wes's date a tall, handsome guy with a faux mohawk haircut but Party Boy did spy the twosome leaving the party holding hands. As he stood on the corner of Sunset and Poinsettia, gazing up at Mr. Right Now, Wes appeared very smitten and goo-goo eyed. Now that's the kind of reality you didn't see on Boy Meets Boy, kids.
But let's enjoy the rest of the party, shall we? James (who's Out's December cover boy) said he has finally quit his human resources job at that L.A. law firm to focus on showbiz. By the way, he's really good friends with another chiseled reality hunk, 29-year-old
Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl. "It's funny," Reichen said. "James and I have played on the same beach volleyball team since before any of this TV stuff happened." Later, the single Reichen who's officially split from Chip Arndt was heard complaining to pals that he can't get a date. This had partygoers scratchin' their heads, as this soiree had no lack of single men. Hey, Reichen! Party Boy's single, available and accessible via the link at the bottom of this column. Not to be overly forward, but I'm just sayin'...
Out on the patio, Flashdance star Jennifer Beals looked stunning in black, chatting the night away with her co-stars from The L Word. (That's Showtime's new lesbian drama, debuting in January.) Lenny Clarke hung out with his castmates from ABC's It's All Relative. The sitcom's exec producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, were there, too but they kept mum about the recent controversy surrounding their TV miniseries, The Reagans. Zadan's glad Showtime will air it Nov. 30 they're striking while public interest is hot but refused to comment on CBS's decision to drop The Reagans. "If we told the truth," he winked, "it would be... unpleasant. So we're not saying anything for now."
As the bustling party wound down, Out staffers ran short on gift bags for guests. Horrors! Celebs were lovin' the gratis goodies, like Tea Tree hair goop and Kenneth Cole's new Black cologne for men. "Now how am I gonna smell like Kyan from Queer Eye?" I wondered aloud. Happily, my pal Bill Brochtrup who plays John, the gay secretary on NYPD Blue generously offered me his own bag. What a nice guy! Bless his heart, I couldn't take it... Well, okay, I did. Cheers, Bill!
