Organic food watchdog groups are turning up the heat on ABC, demanding the network fire John Stossel
for his false 20/20
report about organic vegetables. The network, which will air a retraction on tonight's show, blamed the debacle on Stossel's producer, David Fitzpatrick
, slapping him with a one-month suspension without pay. Stossel, meanwhile, was to receive a "formal reprimand." But Kenneth Cook
, president of the Environmental Working Group, tells the New York Post
that Fitzpatrick has been made the scapegoat and "I will continue to make noise until [Stossel] gets fired." The controversial report, which first aired in February and was rebroadcast last month despite protests, intimated that organic foods could be deadly. According to Variety
, the Organic Trade Association is considering a lawsuit.
