Ingmar Bergman, the legendary Swedish director who helmed more than 50 films, passed away today at the age of 89. The cause of his death has not yet been determined. His classic film The Seventh Seal includes a scene in which a knight plays chess with the Grim Reaper.

"I was terribly scared of death," Bergman has said of his inspiration for the tableau. His other features include Wild Strawberries, Persona and Fanny and Alexander.
