Though he's no household name, Lawrence Monoson makes a good living playing some of TV's baddest brutes. Recalling his six-episode stint on ER last year, the actor laughs that he was so reviled as serial killer/rapist Dean Rollins, even Alex Kingston's saintly Dr. Elizabeth Corday "couldn't decide whether or not to kill me!"
Monoson crossed another leading lady back on Beverly Hills, 90210, where he "played an undercover FBI agent going to college, and arrested Shannen Doherty which was really hot." Mischievously, he adds: "I got to put her in handcuffs. I think Shannen and I both liked that." (Uhm, we hate to burst your bubble, Larry, but you're hardly the only lawman to have had the pleasure...)
Recently, Monoson was reunited with another 90210 co-star, Brian A. Green, when both handsome hunks joined the Showtime Hispanic drama Resurrection Blvd. (which airs Tuesdays at 10 pm/ET). Candidly, he offers: "I think from Showtime's point of view, they're interested in bringing in a different audience, since there's been so much press about it being just a Latin show." No doubt Green can deliver his teen sudser's ever-loyal fanbase, but Monoson hopes just serving up his own special brand of brawn and badass 'tude will suffice for his part.
From what we've seen of his trash-talkin' Italian stallion, Joey "The Rock" Minelli, his larger-than-life presence will definitely add much-needed punch to the show's boxing plotlines. Titillating even as he intimidates if you missed last week's locker-room scene, baby, you missed a lot the in-your-face, ghetto-sexy Rock never bores. "The part is great," Monoson says. "It allows me to be sexual and provocative and theatrical in a way that's truthful, because this guy survives by covering his insecurity with bravado so he puts on this crazy front."
And as for his buff character's skimpy wardrobe he's sometimes clad in little more than boxer briefs, appropriately enough Monoson grins: "I don't take it seriously. It's not who I really am; it's a playful thing. Besides, it's fun to go out there and strut your stuff and have a good time!"
