Britney Spears to Kick Off the VMAs

MTV announced Wednesday that Britney Spears will open this year's Video Music Awards - but not with a musical performance.

The network confirmed to TVGuide.com that the pop star will kick off Sunday's event (Sept. 7, 9 pm/ET) in a surprising way, although details were not revealed. Spears, who's nominated for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me," may be making something of a comeback after her shocking 2007 routine. Already, she's appeared in two promos with 2008 host Russell Brand and hasn't missed a step (yet).

"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?," Spears said in a statement. "I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."

The pop star's 2007 performance was, of course, not her only noteworthy VMA moment. In the past, she's danced with snakes and famously smooched Madonna, among other antics. What could possibly top those? You tell us. - Anna Dimond
