AXED!

It's not easy being Tom Green today. MTV has abruptly pulled the plug on The New Tom Green Show — just weeks after the music channel renewed the late-night talker for an additional 65 episodes. "Despite critical acclaim, [the show] was unfortunately unable to sustain the initial ratings success it enjoyed in its earlier weeks," an MTV spokeswoman tells TV Guide Online. "Tom remains a part of the MTV family, and we look forward to working with him in the future." MTV shouldn't hold its breath: Sources say Green is already shopping the show elsewhere. read more

FIRESTARTER

Denis Leary has signed on to play a New York firefighter in Rescue Me, a one-hour dramedy pilot for FX. The comic-actor — whose real-life Firefighters Foundation has raised more than $1 million for local fire departments — also serves as the project's creator-exec producer. read more

ARE YOU STILL GAME?

The Game Show Network has acquired rerun rights to the original Regis Philbin-hosted Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Rumor has it GSN may follow ABC's groundbreaking strategy of airing the quizzer as often as possible until viewers get sick of it and stop watching. read more

KAREN WEDS

Will & Grace's Megan Mullally married fiancé Nick Offerman Saturday night in a private Los Angeles ceremony, Extra reports. In related news, rocker Melissa Etheridge and actress-girlfriend Tammy Lynn Michaels (Popular) tied the knot in a commitment ceremony over the weekend. read more

A federal appeals court Tuesday unanimously reinstated California's Oct. 7 gubernatorial recall election, rejecting a three-judge panel's decision to delay it until March. Translation: Mary Carey's 15 minutes are almost up. read more

GUINEY PIG?

The owners of a $4.5 million Malibu estate are suing the producers of The Bachelor, claiming their crib was trashed during the show's month-long shoot there. According to TheSmokingGun.com, Kenneth Chyten and his wife claim that when the cast and crew (including star Bob Guiney) vacated the two acre spread, they left behind holes in the walls, a poisonous spider infestation and a rodent problem (we assume they mean host Chris Harrison). The couple is seeking $5 million in damages. read more

EMMY RATINGS

Maybe it was the failed multiple-emcee format. Maybe it was the three-hour-plus running time. Or maybe, just maybe, it was Bill Cosby's shades. Whatever the reason, Sunday's Emmys notched a below-average 17.7 million viewers. That's off 11 percent from last year's show on NBC, when Conan O'Brien hosted — alone. Hint, hint. Actor Gordon Jump, best known to TV audiences as befuddled station manager Arthur Carlson on WKRP in Cincinnati, died Monday of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 71. Jump also made his mark in commercials as the lonely Maytag repairman, a character he inhabited for more than a decade. read more
